Dear Sylvia presents the works of nine female photo-media artists who explore some of the many ways of representing the female body. These artists fit within the long history of women who have challenged the established codes of representation in order to question the role that the female body occupies in today’s society.

Behind or in front of the camera, women are fearless in their depiction of their own contradictions, doubts and strengths, whether they stage their own body, reconstruct those of others or document the political and social realities of bodies that suffer and fight. Dear Sylvia presents a mix of photographic genres from documentary to contemporary photography that literally shows women who have taken hold of their image. It opens intuitive conversations with some of the many themes approached by poet and novelist Sylvia Plath in her work – body, self, nature, motherhood, social norms, objectification, and death.
