Photo of the Week: Michael Eastman

Photo of the Week - 06.11.15

With the 19th edition of Paris Photo opening its doors in six days in the historic Grand Palais, our Photo of the Week is the one used for the poster of the 2015 premier photo fair.

This image is by American photographer Michael Eastman. Born in 1947, Eastman was influenced by Edward Weston and Ansel Adams in the early stages of his career in the late 1960s and began to use large format and colour film in the 1980s, quickly contributing to define new ways of using colour in photography. For 40 years, he has travelled the world, documenting the interiors and facades of cities such as Havana, Rome, Paris and New Orleans. The very absence of human beings reinforced by the images' poetical monumentality highlights the melancholy of cities whose past grandeur is vanishing into a mythological present. With a discrete sense of nostalgia, Eastman's distinctive colour palette and painterly aesthetics take the viewer to another place and time.
