After six years at the Australian Centre for Photography, Curator Claire Monneraye has announced that she will be relocating home to Paris at the end of July 2017.
Claire joined ACP in 2011 as Assistant Curator where highlights included; The retrospective dedicated to major performance photographer Heidrun Löhr, Beyond the Last Sky: Contemporary photography and video from Palestine; Making Change: Celebrating the 40 years anniversary of Australia-China diplomatic relations; Pat Brassington: A Rebours and the year-long project Robert Besanko, Contemplations.
Promoted to Curator in 2014 after having worked on the survey exhibition of esteemed Australian artist Anne Ferran, Claire counts numerous projects of Australian and International photomedia, nationally and internationally as highlights of her career. These include Dear Sylvia, Gohar Dashti, Murray Fredericks and Tom Schutzinger, Dye 2, Ex&Post Eastern Europe under the lens, Martin Parr: Life's a beach and Shaun Gladwell. Virtual Imperator. Her most significant contribution, the large-scale exhibition Under the sun: Reimagining Max Dupain's Sunbaker presented 15 newly commissioned works that challenged one of Australia's most iconic images and explored issues associated with national identity.
Claire has worked closely with artists and the Australian photographic community to foster audience engagement with the diversity of forms and ideas offered by contemporary photography. Claire was a mainstay of the Australian Centre for Photography during its relocation and reshaping in 2015/2016. She maintained a steady presence and continued to push to exhibitions program through pop-up and project spaces alike without compromising on quality.
"I feel incredibly privileged to have been part of such a respected institution and to have had the opportunity to contribute to its vibrant creative scene by working closely with many generous and talented individuals and stakeholders. I am looking forward to working on projects, exhibitions and publications that will continue to support Australian artists and foster exchange of ideas internationally."
The Australian Centre of Photography Team will greatly miss Claire; her expertise, her knowledge of Australian photography and commitment to the organisation (and her humour and her apple stash). We wish Claire and her husband all our best wishes in their relocation home to France.
We welcome the ACP community to join us in farewelling Claire at the opening of our next exhibition, Synthetic, on Thursday 20 July at 6pm.
